Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at exploring differences between the victimisation experiences, social support networks, mental/physical health consequences and histories of abuse in urban and rural victims of intimate partner violence who had taken out protective orders against their abusive spouse. The findings suggest some of the key differences between urban and rural women's experience of violence include education levels, social support, history of the abusive relationship and the incidence of exposure to child abuse. Some of the difficulties in accessing rural women are discussed and further research into the service, health and welfare needs of rural women is suggested.en
