This presents a conversation between an imaginary researcher (R) and an imaginary battered woman (B), where the researcher represents some of the traits of researchers in the field of domestic violence fatality review. It seeks to raise questions about the voices at fatality reviews and to promote discussion, and gives a background on fatality review in the US. At the end of 2004, 32 states in the US had fatality reviews. At least half of these states have passed enabling legislation. Issues raised include the tendency for these reviews to be overly professionalised and bureaucratised; the limited presence of battered women, the victim’s friends, family and other community members not connected to professional agencies; and the tendency to focus on individual or aggregate case details instead of addressing broader social, economical and political issues.en
