Explores the dual fold advantages of adopting an explanatory model to aid social workers to identify and assess risk factors of domestic violence amongst refugees and then to choose appropriate intervention strategies within a service model. In an effort to explain domestic violence in the refugee population Walter reviews and compares domestic violence and refugee mental health literature for the purpose of identifying commonalities between the two. From the ecological framework she constructs, Walter argues that an increase in ecological instability, as is pivotal to the refugee experience, compounds stress and instability in personal relationships. She then develops an explanatory model which may be used to inform service practice, as a precise and effective means of dealing with the special needs of refugees who are violent to their partners.en
