General Overview: :This journal article reports on a study of violent Scottish men and partners of abusers to examine men’s responses to their violence.

Methodology: :The authors conducted interviews with 122 Scottish men convicted of assaulting their wives and 136 women partners of abusers, to examine the men’s perceptions of their own violence. The study made use of Goffman’s (1971) concept of ‘remedial work’ to analyse men’s and women’s accounts of men’s responses to violence. Remedial work involves the perpetrator try to change the meaning of the offensive act to something more acceptable.

Discussion: :The authors describe the ways violent men try to minimise their violence. The types of remedial work identified included denial, blame, minimisation, reduced competence, apology and demands. The study revealed that few of the men interviewed were willing to accept complete responsibility for their abusive behaviours.
