Presents the methodology and findings of a series of in-depth interviews conducted with residents of the Sheriff King Home shelter for assaulted women in Calgary, Canada. The nature and availability of short and long term shelter services in Canada is discussed and published research on women’s experiences of shelter stays reviewed, highlighting the failure of many services to ensure that ongoing evaluation processes are in place. High levels of satisfaction with the support provided by staff and other residents, safety and security of the environment and availability of child care resources were reported. Concerns expressed included the limited availability of counselling services, difficulties with communal living stemming from the behaviour of other residents, the lack of culturally specific services and the need for more time at the shelter. It is noted that many of these problems have since been addressed, but that the issues raised are not specific to the shelter under study. It is suggested that given the capacity of shelter services to save lives and allow women the opportunity to build a safer and freer future for themselves, ongoing development and evaluation is critical.en
