The over four thousand Temporary Protection Visa holders who live in NSW satisfy the UN High Commission for Refugees criteria for being classed as refugees. However, they are not granted refugee rights because of their means of arrival in Australia. This paper comments on a pre-election forum held in March 2003 about the rights of migrant and refugee women in the current conditions of hostility towards Muslims. Policies such as mandatory detention of asylum seekers and the temporality of protection visas were challenged. Immigrant women presented their stories and difficulties in finding employment and accessing services.en
