Outlines the methodology and results of a study aimed at examining psychosocial characteristics of persons at risk of perpetrating intimate partner violence and/or child physical abuse. Participants were selected from a sample of non-treatment-seeking US Navy recruits. Findings suggest characteristics such as dysphoria, posttraumatic stress, alcohol and drug use are associated with increased risk of violence and that risk for either intimate partner violence or child physical abuse increased the risk of involvement in other forms of violence. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are also identified.en
