Provides an overview of major research conducted in the area of violence against women in rural communities and highlights the absence of any sustained evaluation of the impact rural cultures have on women’s experiences of domestic violence. The article then discusses two studies, conducted by the author, which drew on feminist post-structural understandings of culture, to explore questions of meaning, identity and values in rural contexts. The importance of focusing on rural women’s stories of domestic violence and developing appropriate service responses to meet the needs identified, without homogenising the concept of ‘rural cultures’, is emphasised.en
