The South Australia Police (SAPOL) has in place strategies to support people with disabilities, including the SAPOL Disability Action Plan and the Memorandum of Understanding between Disabilities SA and SAPOL. Recruits are trained in responding to a victim's needs, with specific training targeting sexual offences and topics such as misconceptions, society attitudes and psychological consequences of sexual assaults, Rape Trauma Syndrome, the victim's needs and effectively relating to victims. In addition, training is provided on the topics of interviewing, relevant legislation and customer services provided to people with disabilities. SAPOL has adopted 'Investigative Interviewing' of witnesses which includes the 'cognitive interviewing model' with more advanced training for members on the Detective Training Course, Field Intelligence Course and the Interagency Child Protection Course. This model uses open questions, adopts a more interactive style of questioning and adapts methods to suit the needs of person with a disability or impairment.en
