dc.description.notes | This article presents the results of a randomised controlled trial of 272 women attending 52 family doctors in clinics in Victoria, Australia who had screened positive for fear of a partner in the previous 12 months in a health and lifestyle survey. The treatment group was offered counselling based on the Psychosocial Readiness Model by their doctors who had completed a Healthy Relationships Training program. The control group received "usual care".<br/ ><br/ >Follow-up at 12 months showed little difference between the two groups; however, those in the test group appeared to have benefited from the counselling sessions in that they showed a reduction in depressive symptoms compared to the control group.<br/ ><br/ >The authors recommend that family doctors be encouraged to inquire about the safety of their patients and their children and to provide counselling in cases of domestic abuse. | en |
