Discusses the relationship between substance abuse and ‘woman abuse’ or the abuse of a female spouse, by a male, outlining the variety of explanations which have been suggested from a diversity of perspectives. Studies from the US supporting a link between substance abuse and women abuse are then reviewed and it is suggested that although there may be a relationship between the two, it is not a causal one. Some of the key factors linking men’s use of substances with subsequent violence against women are identified and the implications these findings have for intervention are discussed. Highlights the need to recognise not only the substance abuse patterns of perpetrators, but of victims and emphasises the importance of considering a variety of perspectives in the development of interventions and programmes targeting substance abuse and woman abuse.en
