Notes: | This article examines some of the legislative and policy challenges and controversies that have arisen within Australia as a result of an increasing focus on the best interests of the child. The authors begin with a discussion of the origination of the concept, exploring how practices around mandatory reporting and family privacy have shifted in the last 30 years. This is followed by a discussion, often in comparison with the US, of the following child protection issues in Australia: forensic practice and managing risk, witnessing domestic violence, changing expectations of parents including attachment theory, surveillance and monitoring, needs of Indigenous children and future directions. |
