| dc.description.notes | Describes a ‘cultural context model’ of therapy with couples in the US where the man has used violence, developed from work with couples from low income minority groups that have suffered discrimination. The authors expand the concept of accountability beyond the criminal justice intervention system (which they identify as replicating patterns of domination and subordination) to include the concept of ‘cultural integrity’. Links are established within communities whereby men and women from particular cultural groups - ‘cultural consultants’ - are part of the intervention system. Separate socio-educational ‘culture circles’ are used as the context within which to raise consciousness about sexism and other forms of privilege and oppression. Also addresses the interaction of substance abuse and domestic violence, pointing out where 12 step programmes, though valuable in many respects, are incompatible with the goals of domestic violence intervention -- i.e. safety for victims and accountability for batterers. | en |
