dc.description.notes | Explores some of the key questions which have emerged from the debate surrounding women’s use of violence against their intimate heterosexual partners, categorising existing research in this area into three main groups – research suggesting intimate abuse is gender-neutral; research suggesting women’s primary motivation towards violence is self-defence and/or retaliation; and research which attempts to draw together a range of factors that contribute to women’s violent behaviour, such as cross-cultural perceptions of violence. Major trends in the research are identified and it is suggested that our current understandings of women’s violence is marred by a tendency to remove behaviour from its social context and the range of institutions that influence it. | en |
