They review guidelines taken from the findings of an international consensus group and from a literature review and search of a number of medical databases. The authors define intimate partner violence and explain why it is a major public health problem. They discuss the kinds of services and initiatives medical practitioners should be offering patients who are victims of IPV and their families. They explore expectations of patients regarding the care they should receive from their medical practitioner.
