This paper draws on research conducted by Janet Ristock on both lesbians who had experienced intimate partner violence and service providers in Canada. The participants’ experiences challenged the perception of domestic violence as a consequence of gender-based power imbalance. Even though power and control are remaining issues in intra-lesbian violence, both partners might be identified as victims and perpetrators. Similarly, attributes like status, resources and physical strength were not only observed in the perpetrators but also within the victims. Service responses need to acknowledge that the same person might be an abuser and the abused, and that some victimised women are not afraid.en
