dc.description.notes | This document was developed in response to the difficulties voiced by women living with domestic violence about their counselling experiences and in recognition of the need to identify good practice, especially for services with limited expertise in counselling women experiencing domestic violence. It is divided into three parts. Part One identifies difficulties expressed by women about their counselling experiences. Part Two provides a review of literature relevant to counselling women experiencing domestic violence. This includes an analysis of different theory bases underpinning approaches to counselling with emphasis on what is helpful in explaining and understanding domestic violence and women’s experience. Part Three includes standards for counselling practice (one page), ‘A Guide to Counselling’ for women when selecting and assessing counsellors and a bibliography. Asserts that counselling women requires specific knowledge regarding the nature and impact of domestic violence and a feminist orientation to counselling if the needs and safety of women are to be addressed. | en |
