dc.description.notes | Discusses the development, design and key findings of a research project aimed at exploring how literacy, educational and training needs of domestic violence victims are dealt with by domestic violence service providers. The author recognises the recent shift away from regarding the literacy/ESL and domestic violence sectors as distinct and unrelated. Focusing on the views and practices of those providing counselling and health services to victims of domestic violence, the study identified a number of critical issues – in particular, the need for greater recognition and support for women with limited literacy, the importance of making literacy a priority and ensuring institutional coordination between different service providers, and the demand for better training of staff in responding to women experiencing literacy and domestic violence problems. Areas of achievement and future challenges and directions for research and practice are also identified. | en |
