Title: Working with men to prevent violence against women : program modalities and formats (part two)
Authors: Berkowitz, Alan
Keywords: Dating violence;Perpetrators;Prevention
Categories: Prevention
Year: 2004
Publisher: VAWnet Library, [Harrisburg
Notes:  This discusses best practices in men’s prevention of violence against women in the United States. It gives an overview of programme modalities (content) and formats (how the information is provided and delivered), and reviews pedagogies or philosophies (regarding how to help men change). It notes that literature evaluating these programmes is limited, with the majority of research done on sexual assault prevention programmes for college students and dating violence programmes for school students. It finds that successful prevention programmes are comprehensive, relevant, intensive, incorporate positive messages and may use some of the following strategies: developing empathy towards victims, changing individual men’s attitudes and behaviours, teaching men to intervene against other men’s behaviour and social marketing to promote positive norms.
