Women within this group rarely seek or accept help from service providers, as they do not understand their rights, do not speak English, fear sending the partners to prison, experience cultural shame and financial hardship. Through social services effectively liaising with police, specifically the DV liaison officer, about cases of domestic violence amongst women with non-English speaking backgrounds, workers were then able to provide the necessary interpreters and services to aid the women. In the Sydney area where this programme took place, 90 per cent of women went ahead with AVOs in comparison to 5 per cent in the previous programme where there was little liaison between police and workers.en
