This newsletter summarises the key family law reforms and their implementation status. It lists the major changes in the Bill:<br/ ><br/ >-if the court considers it not to be in the child’s best interests, then the court must consider ‘substantial and significant time’ (more than just weekends and holidays);<br/ ><br/ >Family Relationship Centres’ roles are explained. These Centres will provide information for families at all stages of family relationships, including public information sessions; help families use other services through referrals to help prevent relationship breakdown; help for separating families through individual interviews to consider the next steps such as dispute resolution, parenting plans, referrals to counselling or other programs to keep families together; or through joint sessions for separating parents if suitable. It also includes the locations of all 65 Family Relationship Centres across Australia, and indicates the first 15 Centres to be running in mid-way through 2006.<br/ ><br/ >As part of the Family Law Violence Strategy, the Australian Attorney-General will commission independent research about how the courts deal with allegations of violence. As part of this new strategy, measures will be developed, such as: working with State and Territory Governments, to improve investigation and reporting of family violence; re-working provisions in the Family Law Act to ensure State and Territory Courts’ apprehended violence orders work consistently with Family Court orders; improving court processes for cases involving violence, in the way cases dealing with child abuse are dealt with in Project Magellan; and asking the Family Law Council to review how cases involving violence could be better dealt with.<br/ ><br/ >A timeline is provided, indicating where the implementation has reached at the time of writing.en
