This is a submission made by the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress to the Northern Territory’s Aboriginal Family Violence Strategy Evaluation. It summarises areas of concern: rates of domestic violence; low recruitment and retainment of people to occupy the Aboriginal Domestic Violence Strategy worker positions in Central Australia and the need for community control and high levels of skills significant to the employment of these workers; caution in terms of allocating resources to media campaigns with little evidence of benefits or effectiveness; and issues of limited resourcing. Strategies in Central Australia that have had some success are summarised, including the Tennant Creek Alcohol Restrictions; and the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara (NPY), Women’s Council Cross Border Domestic Violence Project that aims to protect women by removing the offender through the courts if necessary, by giving sustained support for women over a number of years and campaigning for alcohol sale restrictions.en
