| dc.description.notes | The Domestic Violence & Incest Resource Centre and No To Violence, the Male Family Violence Prevention Association, respond to the Federal Government’s proposed family law and child contact reform package from the position that the basis for post-separation parenting arrangements continues to be what is in the best interests of the child. The two organisations see the proposed Family Relationship Centres as an important place for separating parents to access appropriate information and referrals. However, they recommend that the centres be specifically equipped to support families where violence is an issue and that staff be given comprehensive competency-based training. Other recommendations are that there be a presumption of no contact where violence or abuse is present until the abusive parent demonstrates a capability for safe parenting, that parents should have the choice to be represented by legal professionals throughout the entire process, and that equal shared parenting responsibilities should be subject to the competence of individual families. | en |
