General Overview: :This Australian report argues that the New Approach to Family Violence Strategy, initiated by the Victorian Government in 2002, contains gaps regarding immediate crisis accommodation and long term support.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: :The author notes that there is limited availability of supported interim crisis accommodation for victims of domestic violence and some women in crisis are placed in motels. Statistics are cited showing that women placed in motels are much more likely than women placed in supported accommodation to return to the violent situation. The report also details the long term needs of survivors of domestic violence, including physical and mental health impacts on mothers, parenting challenges and on-going legal issues. These needs are not effectively dealt with by the New Approach. The publishers of the report, Mercy Care and Western Women's Domestic Violence Support Network, offer a model for responding to these needs. They receive minimal government funding and are not able to fulfil unmet need.en
