This booklet aims to help politicians, community leaders and parents to understand the merits of the proposed Family Law Act changes, and addresses any misinformation. The proposed changes include a legal presumption of shared parental responsibility for children after separation, and ‘equal time’ parenting arrangements. It explains why some children never or rarely see their father and why most of the children of separated parents live with their mother. It recognises that family violence is a problem. It outlines the findings that many legal claims against the resident parents lack merit or are trivial, and that resident parents have few rights against recalcitrant contact parents. It summarises research on what works best for children: quality not equality and that children want their views to be taken seriously.
