dc.description.notes | General Overview: This Australian report discusses the results of a survey of 308 people who attended the 2006 New Mardi Gras Fair Day (an annual Sydney celebration for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people). The survey asked about the respondents’ experiences of relationship violence.<br/ ><br/ >Findings: The most frequently reported forms of abuse by survey respondents were controlling-jealous behaviour (reported by 47.7% of the respondents), humiliation (45.1%), physical abuse (34.4%) and social isolation (30.8%). A significant number of respondents reported financial abuse (17.8%), sexual abuse (16.8%) and threats to “out” the victim (16.8%). Young people reported high levels of humiliation, outing and controlling-jealous behaviour, while those in the 36-45 age group reported the highest levels of physical and sexual abuse. A majority of those who experienced abuse did not seek any support, and of those who did, most approached family or friends. Of those who experienced abuse, 13.8% had children under 16 in their care.<br/ ><br/ >The report notes that the sampling method means that these results cannot be generalised across the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population but they do indicate disturbing levels of partner violence.<br/ ><br/ >* funds for specialised services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people<br/ >* awareness raising around domestic violence and available support services, and<br/ >* education to improve the capacity of friends and family to assist people experiencing domestic violence. | en |
