Year: 2005

Notes:  This media toolkit is a resource developed as part of the Family Violence in the News pilot project, undertaken in the Grampians Region (Ballarat) of Victoria. It provides information and advice to support the reporting of family violence by media professionals, to reflect current views and understanding of family violence based on input from a range of players from the family violence support sector and the media, and from women who have experienced family violence. It seeks to highlight the role the media plays in influencing public perception about this issue. It also includes contacts, research sources, facts and statistics and suggestions about issues to consider when reporting family violence. It gives a snapshot on media reporting of family violence including the language or headlines, sources, content, common beliefs and stereotypes and placing family violence in context. It also contains information on understanding family violence (what it is, types, those most at risk, legal response and common beliefs); and outlines issues to consider when reporting family violence.
