| dc.description.notes | Overview: This Western Australian information kit and set of guidelines support the development of models of care and service provision that conform to a standard of practice which are locally relevant to the communities in each WA Area Health Service. It outlines the underlying principles and values around the child’s best interests as paramount and recognises that child abuse or neglect is linked to family and domestic violence such that, although the emphases are on the safety and care of the child, the safety and wellbeing of the parent/carer is also a priority.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: Facts about child abuse and neglect, family and domestic violence are provided, along with a list of definitions. It contains a summary on what to do – step 1: identify; step 2: assess and consult; step 3: notify; and step 4: manage. Concerns about possible child abuse, neglect and exposure to family and domestic violence are addressed, such as indicators of abuse, neglect, exposure to family violence; general indicators of child abuse or neglect; general indicators of family and domestic violence; high risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect; and specific indicators of child physical, emotional and sexual abuse or neglect.<br/ ><br/ >Guidance on how to communicate with clients is explained, including: questions to elicit concerns of child abuse, neglect, family and domestic violence; responding to possible abuse or disclosure; people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; Aboriginal children and families; people with disabilities; and staff conduct breaches. There is guidance on consultation with other health workers, other agencies, and self care for health workers. Working with agencies and referrals to other agencies such as the WA Police, and the development of community-based interagency partnerships are examined. Information on assessment, physical examination and documentation are given. Case management and the role of the case manager in the ongoing monitoring of children are included. Appendices also include resources, contact list and body map. Legal information on confidentiality, information sharing, duty of care, consent to treatment and disclosure of material risks, legislative power to detain a child and other legal areas are outlined. | en |
