Notes:	This handbook is aimed for use by advocates and support workers assisting people affected by domestic violence in Western Australia. It contains 14 chapters, a bibliography and 2 Appendices (consent forms and freedom of information request). It outlines the definitions of family and domestic violence, the myths and principles in responding. It looks at assessment and practice issues such as interviewing, confidentiality, referrals, supervision, case management, working with diverse clients, and documentation and evidence (freedom of information and privacy). Safety planning is also incorporated, as well as finding crisis accommodation and worker safety. Housing and income are covered, including how to remove belongings, removing the perpetrator and housing contacts and resources as well as information on Centrelink, child support, community legal centres and welfare rights advice. An overview of the legal system is given, including information on victim support, sources of law, Commonwealth and State courts, civil and criminal proceedings. Restraining orders are explained, including the different types (violence restraining orders, misconduct restraining orders and police orders), breaches, interaction between restraining orders and Family Court. There is a chapter on police, incorporating their response to family violence, investigation, police assessment, police role, evidence and victim statements, delays in service of orders, and making a complaint about police. Criminal proceedings are outlined, including the classification of criminal offences, investigation, charges, role of the prosecutor, and support for victims. Also given are Family Court policies and procedures: information on children, parenting orders, property, orders, injunctions and breaches. There is a chapter on children and young people with information on family law proceedings, supervised contact, child witnesses, care and protection, and abduction. Injury and damage, such as common law action, compensation and criminal injuries compensation are covered. Diverse client groups are addressed. Resources and specific contacts of agencies are provided.
