dc.description.notes | Overview: This Australian paper critically reflects on the way western feminists have worked with women from Non-English Speak Backgrounds [NESB] who have experienced violence. It provides practical ways of broadening a feminist analysis that legitimises the experiences of women who may have radically different world views.

The authors offer practical solutions to better achieve a genuine support service for all women affected by violence. These include understanding that whilst specific instances and experiences of violence may differ greatly, all experiences deemed violence involve pain and suffering, irrespective of the ethnicity of the survivor. They argue that service providers must engage in self-reflective practice, question their approaches and work with an awareness that feminist ‘understandings’ are often culturally biased. When working with clients, the authors suggest that subjects often excluded from a feminist framework, such as the spirituality of women from NESB, be actively included. | en |
