| dc.description.notes | This paper describes the Children’s Health and Safety Needs, the first set of instruments developed in a collaborative project between Anglicare (Western Australia) and Edith Cowan University, funded by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department under the Contact Orders Programme. The aim of the project is to develop a template for mediators, counsellors and legal advisors to help separating parents to develop parenting plans addressing children’s health and safety issues. The instruments are based on the British ‘Looking After Children’ (LAC) documentation system that details the needs of children placed in state care. Issues from the field trial being conducted by mediators from Relationships Australia and Centrecare are presented. It found that the original premise of the instruments being used in child-focussed mediation has not been completely successful due to the current structure of mediation services. However, it concludes that the instruments may provide a template for use in the Family Relationship Centre, based on the concept of ‘parenting plan’ as including both parents to cover the child’s welfare, proposed as part of the changes to the family law system and child custody arrangements. | en |
