dc.description.notes | This review considers whether the Victorian Crimes (Family Violence) Act 1987 is based on a coherent philosophy and whether it is the best approach for handling family violence. National and international approaches are explored. The Victorian Law Reform Commission is currently conducting the first full review of the Victorian intervention order system through comparative analysis of overseas and Australian jurisdictions. This paper describes the Victorian intervention order system and explores the potential legal approaches to family violence. It also discusses the Commission’s current research findings. Three approaches were examined: a strong criminal justice approach; an interagency approach; and a rehabilitative approach. Findings from research and consultations with police, magistrates and lawyers are presented. | en |
