Discusses current understandings of the issue of violence against women and elder abuse, and attempts to draw these areas of knowledge together and stimulate debate regarding the relationship between factors of age, gender, power, violence and control. The failure of feminist advocates, in the past, to recognise the role of age and ageism in women’s lives is highlighted and some recent legal and social policy developments in the US aimed at addressing this gap are described. The paper concludes by examining some of the consequences of abuse for elderly women and a framework that acknowledges the role of age, gender, power and control is advocated.en
