This paper discusses the need to develop theories to explain domestic violence between lesbians. Appropriate intervention approaches, services and policies can be achieved through a better comprehension of the problem. It is argued that some types of research might cause negative consequences for the lesbian community. In particular, the results and the methodology of two USA research studies elaborated by Island and Letellier on gay domestic violence, and by Clare Renzetti on lesbian domestic violence, are challenged. The author concludes by urging lesbians to take active part in the process of understanding their reality.en
