This paper explores some of the aspects that obstruct the empowerment of women who have experienced domestic violence, and impede men’s accountability for their violence. The lack of a law enforcement response that ensures women’s safety presents homelessness as a satisfactory option for abused women and their children. They face poverty and humiliation because the opportunity to remain in their homes is almost nonexistent. Similarly, in order to be entitled for certain services, women need to assume victim status and act accordingly. Moreover, a number of prejudices challenge the women’s mothering skills and the perception of the perpetrator as the only responsible parent.en
