Advocating a more inclusive feminist theory of domestic and family violence, this paper explores some of the ways in which the multidimensional nature of domestic violence can exacerbate the difficulties associated with addressing women’s housing needs, and identifies some of the structures that limit the choices of victims, predisposing them to homelessness. Recent studies examining the various dilemmas encountered by women attempting to leave domestic violence situations are discussed and it is suggested that, although people who experience domestic violence may have nowhere that is safe and secure, in both an objective and subjective sense, they are not viewed by society as ‘homeless’ in the common sense of the word, and services are developed accordingly. Argues for the redevelopment of strategies aimed at protecting women and children in a manner that recognises their right to stay in their own homes and to be protected, by the law, from violence and abuse. Community education regarding family violence and addressing women’s structural disadvantage in the economic sphere are also identified as priority areas for action.en
