Discusses the findings of a series of semi-structured interviews held with self-identified survivors of lesbian domestic violence, all of whom had experienced multiple forms of abuse. Although the interviews held covered a range of topics, from social supports to use of legal and health services, the majority of this paper focuses on the participants views of police responses to and follow up of reported incidence of lesbian domestic violence. The analysis is broken down into three components – whether or not participants felt they should/could contact police for help, whether or not the police took action once the violence was reported and the participants' interpretations and reflections on police responses. Although explicit forms of homophobic behaviour by police was not identified as a problem, it is suggested that much of police inaction and discomfort, reported by respondents, stems from homophobic beliefs and values and it is argued that education in this area should be incorporated into police training.en
