dc.description.notes | Reviews the gradual increase in policing and prosecution of domestic violence and recent research indicating that a hard line criminal justice response does not necessarily meet the needs of the victims or deter the perpetrator from future violence. Poses two major challenges for the criminal justice system, women's advocates, policy makers and researchers. Firstly, how can the system better acknowledge and respond to the heterogeneity of perpetrators such that intervention might be 'tailored' appropriately? Secondly, who should have the most decision making power and control with regard to the criminal justice process, the system and its professionals or the victim? Concludes by discussing some of the implications of these challenges and arguing that a 'one size fits all' approach employed with little training and few alternatives will not prevent domestic violence from occurring and recurring. | en |
