Notes:  Paper presented at the National Forum ‘Men in Relationships: Partnerships in Progress’ in Sydney from 20th-21st of November, 2001. Outlines the background to the ‘Columbus Project’, currently being piloted in Western Australia. Modelled on the ‘Magellan Project’, the programme aims to provide individual case management in cases where child abuse or domestic violence allegations have been made in the course of Family Court proceedings. Current procedures undertaken in relation to child abuse cases in the Western Australian Family Court are reviewed and various problems associated with the current approach, including extended delays and the absence of non-litigous alternatives, highlighted. A proposal for the structure of the programme and a summary of the present status of the project is provided. It is suggested that that by merging the skills of the Court and outside agencies, in accordance with the best practice model of individual case management, utilisation of resources will become more efficient and outcomes for children and families will be improved.
