Presented at the Evaluation in Crime and Justice: Trends and Methods Conference held in Canberra on the 24-25th March 2003, this paper provides a background to the implementation of a range of structural reforms within the WA police service, including the development of improved strategies for police education, professionalisation and collaboration with affiliated agencies. The interdependence of academic and police organisations and the importance of cooperation between ‘academia’ and ‘industry’ is highlighted and the need to move beyond the protectionist mentality of the past is emphasised. The paper concludes with a case study used to illustrate the critical importance of partnerships between various agencies involved in the prevention of violence.en
