This paper explores the incidence of male violence – physical, mental and emotional – against women in Middle Eastern families. Cultural configurations of gender generate and reproduce violence against women. Middle Eastern societies place senior men of a family as the authority in charge of taking all decisions concerning all family members. Consequently, men have the duty to control female sexuality and to react if a female member of their family disrespects society's values. The author discusses the dynamics of pre-marital relationships, adultery, honour killing and forced marriage.en
