Notes: | Discusses the particular circumstances that render women with disabilities outstandingly vulnerable to violence, their needs and the social failure to address the problem. Women with disabilities are targeted by perpetrators because of their gender, their disability and the consequences of being disabled. These women regularly endure social isolation, poverty, dependence on carers, discrimination and exploitation. Society further disempowers women with disabilities by not providing suitable opportunities and condoning the violence. Despite the number of people with disabilities and the incidence of violence, services are frequently inaccessible, inadequate or non-existent. The community – in particular, women with disabilities – workers and carers need to be informed of what constitutes appropriate treatment and where it can be found. |
