The authors attended intervention order hearings in a number of magistrates' courts where NESB women were complainants, and conducted interviews with the Refuge Ethnic Workers' programme to obtain the information. It was found that the victim's conduct and culture were perceived as more significant factors for the violence than the perpetrator's behaviour. The less the Anglo culture was absorbed, the more likely the woman would be diagnosed as deviant. Several examples of racism, discrimination, humiliation and ignorance committed by magistrates against these women are included. | en |
