Note: The unedited full text of the papers of this conference were originally published on floppy disk as Multiculturalism and the Law [electronic resource].<br/ >This paper describes the experiences of women from a non-English speaking background who have sought legal intervention. The authors attended intervention order hearings in a number of magistrates' courts where NESB women were complainants, and conducted interviews with the Refuge Ethnic Workers' programme to obtain the information. It was found that the victim's conduct and culture were perceived as more significant factors for the violence than the perpetrator's behaviour. The less the Anglo culture was absorbed, the more likely the woman would be diagnosed as deviant. Several examples of racism, discrimination, humiliation and ignorance committed by magistrates against these women are included.en
