This paper explores financial elder abuse derived from the management of their assets by family members or close friends. Interviews of 127 older people and family members and friends were performed to identify the factors that facilitate the abuse. These people provided their perspectives about accountability procedures, sharing of assets and management of the finances. Some of the causes of financial abuse were identified as: the lack of recognition of financial abuse as such by the people involved; both victims and offenders excuse the behaviour; victims are reluctant to report the incident, and the offence has a low risk of detection. Similarly, the conditions that facilitate financial abuse are explored in the light of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory.en
