The dynamics of domestic abuse facilitate the maintenance of power and control regardless of the presence or absence of constant physical violence. Fear is grounded within the women and their children causing them to both stay in and leave the abusive relationship. Subsequent health and behavioural problems are usually found with children in refuges. Children need a safe space to express their feelings and strengthen relationships with their mothers. Nevertheless, this article, based on UK data, demonstrates that the current trend is to grant contact orders to abusive parents, which helps to track down victims and increases the risk to children. Unsupervised contact reinforces the father’s control. More effective measures need to be established to protect women and children from domestic violence perpetrators.en
