Presented at the Practice and Prevention: Contemporary Issues in Adult Sexual Assault in NSW:Conference, this paper provides an overview of research into sexual violence against young people in Australia and the barriers to intervention that can arise. The nature and purpose of prevention programmes targeted at adolescents are then discussed and the need for more transparent approaches to the theoretical underpinnings of preventative responses is highlighted. A summary of current approaches to prevention in Australia, including ‘whole of school’, ‘curriculum development and integration’ and ‘community development’ strategies, is then provided and the key features of these responses are described. Attempts at evaluating the various approaches are then reviewed and the paucity of formal evaluative mechanisms is highlighted. The need for a multi-level approach that address a range of causal factors is emphasised and a range of other issues that arose through the review, such as the need for specific consultation strategies, information for parents and acknowledgement of cultural context, is identified. The paper concludes with a series of recommendations for future development of prevention programmes targeted at young people.en
