Notes:  Presented at the 4th National Outlook Symposium on Crime in Australia – New Crimes or New Responses, this paper explores the relationship between drug usage, crime and socio-economic conditions in regional areas, highlighting the tendency for research and analysis in this area to focus on metropolitan cities. Argues that while this metropolitan bias may be due to the statistically higher incidence of crime in urban areas, the failure of policy and research initiatives to recognise the problems of under-reporting in rural areas has prevented the further development of local and community-based strategies for addressing concerns like alcohol and drug misuse, corruption and family violence.
