General Overview:This keynote paper from the 2008 International Conference on Homicide considers homicide-suicide as a unique type of violence. It suggests that this violence cannot be understood as an extension of either homicidal or suicidal behaviour.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion:This paper discusses the particularities of homicide followed by a suicide or a parasuicide. The author begins with a literature review suggesting that this violence has been understood as an extension of either homicidal or suicidal behaviour, rather than a unique kind of violence. Through case study analysis Liem suggests that suicide following a homicide is different to both homicide and suicide. Whilst all three kinds of violence are based on severe mental instability, the perpetrators of homicide-suicide also experienced feelings of far-reaching dependency on the victim(s).<br/ ><br/ >The author discusses the implications of her findings for homicide-suicide prevention. Liem suggests that professionals ought to consider that individuals reporting suicidal ideation may also be experiencing homicidal ideation and vice-versa. Further, those incarcerated for homicide must be considered at risk of suicide. Finally, firearms control and legislative restriction is useful in the prevention of homicide, suicide and homicide-suicide.en
