Notes:  Overview:‘Safe from the Start’ was a project undertaken by The Salvation Army in Tasmania to investigate the negative effects of domestic and family violence on young children. This paper examines the background to the project, the need for the project, and its aims and implementation. The project methodology is also detailed.

Discussion:. ‘Safe from the Start’ aimed to identify best practice guidelines for members of the domestic and family violence sector working with children aged 0-6 who have been affected by family violence. Further, it aimed to form effective programs for children and train service workers in these programs and to implement effective assessment of these programs.

The report suggests that ‘Safe from the Start’ was a response to a gap in the support services provided by refuges and other emergency housing measures. Moreover, whilst women are provided with counselling after leaving violence, children - especially the very young - are often distracted from their experiences rather than supported to think and work through them.

Finally, the report examines the ‘Safe from the Start’ resources in detail. These are contained in a resource kit of educative games and books for children who have experienced violence, abuse and/or trauma. It suggests how each of these tools should be used.
