| dc.description.notes | For speech notes and slides from the forum see <a href= "http://www.noviolence.com.au/annualforum.html" target="_blank">Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research</a><br/ >General Overview: This report summarises the goals, presentations and forum evaluation feedback of the Indigenous Family Violence Prevention Forum held at Central Queensland University on 19-20 May 2010. This year was the first time the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research (QCDFVR) worked in partnership with the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and Charles Darwin University (CDU) to present the forum as a national event.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: A total of 206 people attended the 2010 forum, whose theme was Safe homes, solid families, let's build on it!: Keynote speakers were:<br/ ><br/ >* Mike Gooda – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission, who focussed his presentation on prevention of domestic and family violence by applying justice reinvestment strategies<br/ >* Pam Greer – New South Wales Health Education Centre against Violence, who presented 'Abuse, hurt, pain and heartbreak – Rarely seen, rarely heard'<br/ >* Judy Atkinson – Director, Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples, Southern Cross University.<br/ >* Domestic and family violence and homelessness:included speakers Wayne Fossey from Beenleigh Housing, Queensland; Pat Cora from Tenants' Union of Queensland; and Gracelyn Smallwood from James Cook University, Queensland).<br/ ><br/ >* Abuse of older people:featured Dulcie Bronsch from Lifeline Community Care (Queensland); Aunty Jenny Thompson, an elder in the community; Yvette Holt, a health literacy educator; and Grant Sarra, a trainer and workshop facilitator.<br/ ><br/ >* Children and domestic and family violence:followed Judy Atkinson's keynote address. Speakers included Nancy Sweeney from Darwin and Therese Purantatameri from the Tiwi Islands, as well as Jesse King from Katherine, Eileen Cummings from Darwin and Matthew Willis from the Australian Institute of Criminology.<br/ ><br/ >Four yarning sessions were held. Three of them followed the panel discussions and were concerned with the themes of those discussions. The fourth session included circles on working with men, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disabilities who experience domestic and family violence and specialist domestic and family violence training.<br/ ><br/ >The forum evaluation/feedback section of this report includes statistics on the responses provided by the participants, recommendations for themes to be covered in future forums and additional recommendations and suggestions for the 2011 state forum. | en |
